Pinstripes in the country, not the city

This is one of my favourite fields locally, in Pinhay. If you get the time just right when the maize is sprouting, the setting sun throws rather nice shadows over its voluptuous curves.

maize

I've been back many times over the years to catch this, and last night, was rewarded by my first-ever sighting locally of a brown hare. She was poised just on the crest of the hill you see here, and of course took flight as soon as I came into view. But a magical experience, nevertheless.

Lovely picture, and a nice rare spotting of a brown hare too. I've seen them from the train before but never very close.

Your reply brought to mind JMW Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed - do you know it?

I do, and it's a lovely picture. Almost impressionistic.

Makes one merge with nature - a sublime , almost ethereal experience.

We lived in the Cotswolds for 18 months and I can still remember the thrill of seeing a brown hare. I managed to catch a photo of her sitting in the lane one morning - they are so lovely. As is your field.

The colours in your picture remind me of 'shot silk' that changes colour in the light. Magical!

When I was a teenager, I had what I thought was a very glamorous long skirt in shot taffeta: indigo and burgundy. Made from a cut-down evening dress of my Mum's - I imagine pre-war. I hadn't thought of it for years, but can still see, feel and smell it! (Viscose I think - had a very distinctive smell.)

Indigo and burgundy - I can just imagine that! I remember once cutting up a chintz cleaning overall of my mother-in-laws for one of my daughters for a school concert - it was surprisingly shiny and from a distance looked very impressive. I think I've still got it somewhere, too....

You picture reminds me of a conversation with my then four year old nephew. It was autumn and there was a lovely mist with the sun shining through, a flock of white birds followed behind a plough, and the small boy stood looking and let out a deep sigh of satisfaction with - as I thought - the beauty of the scene. After a few moments watching he said "Beautiful straight furrows - very good ploughing." A true farmer's son.

We were talking at work today, and all of us have noticed large numbers of brown hares this spring.

Not sure why but that photo reminds me of France and lavender fields!!
