Snowdrop Valley, Exmoor

by loiswakeman @ 12/02/2008 - 20:43:52

Today was the day when I decided to "Carpe Diem" - after weeks of crouching over the computer at work, we went to Wheddon Cross on Exmoor to see the Snowdrop Valley on a glorious sunny day. And I was so glad we did.

It was quite early when we got there, and the mist was still clearing from the woods.

Following the path next to the River Avill, we saw carpets of these lovely white flowers all along the way. By now, a few others had arrived, and the paths were starting to fill up.

snowdrops and fungus, Exmoor

Close up, I saw some lovely red fungus on the woodland floor

and the mossy logs made a nice contrast to the bluer foliage of the flowers.

Everywhere we looked, sheets of dainty white carpeted the woodland. The wood was filling up by now, and everywhere I stopped, someone was waiting for me to get out of his photo!

One last view as we got back to the road, ready for the long walk back up to Wheddon, where we had a nice cuppa, cake and a sit down in the Village Hall.

(We left just in time to miss the coach-load of screeching children in fluorescent tabards who arrived - like a flock of parakeets - to spoil the breathless calm of the valley.)

A nice break in routine to catch snowdrop time in one of its magnificent displays. As you say, carpe diem and it could all have been gone if you hadn't take the opportunity.

So many snowdrops. The Guardian or the Independant this weekend was saying that Britain was in the grips of 'Snowdropmania' this year! That and rookamania I think. So many more rooks than I remember. (don't think the two are related though!)

Yes - there were acres of them. I don't know about rooks - like most farmland birds, they seem to wax and wane. Lots (like pigeons) in the summer when there is standing corn to pack at, but not many in winter. Of course, they are shot as vermin too. I believe rook breast pie is good, though I haven't tried it.

Great scenes. You enjoyed it so much 'cause you were so far away from it all for so long.By the way, Parakeeets add colour and life to the woods .

Thanks - yes - they do indeed - but what I fancied just then was peace and quiet, not life lived to the max!

Absolutely beautiful - I've never been there. I must remedy that next year. I loved the misty photo.

Yes - that's my favourite too. I had to take it quickly, as the first busload of visitors was just disgorging and they were about to stream up the path.

There is a lot of info about the walk here in case you get there next year.

How lovely the snowdrops look and there are so many of them. It was an excellent idea to go out on a sunny Sunday and have a look at them. Thanks for sharing these lovely pics!

Absolutely marvellous. Stroke of luck arriving before the coachload of brats.
