Big Garden Birdwatch results, 2008

by loiswakeman @ 26/01/2008 - 10:47:19

bird tableMother Nature smiled on me today with a cold but sunny morning to spend my hour counting garden birds.

Blackbirds: 5
Robins: 2
Chaffinches: 3
Coal tits: 2
Blue tits: 1
Great tits: 2
Greenfinches: 1
Dunnocks: 2
Carrion crows: 1
Pheasants: 1

I could hear a song-thrush singing in a tree, but no matter how carefully I scanned the branches, couldn't see the pesky fellow. I know we have wrens too, but they are so shy I didn't see any. Oh, and 2 squirrels and Betty, who don't count as they can't fly!

If you have an hour to spare, please consider taking part!

That's a fantastic count - so diverse. I'm going to do another count later because first time around I just got blackbirds and sparrows - of course now there are magpies, tits and wagtails about too... typical!

We (or rather, Mr Penry) did this too... he hasn't given me his list yet though! I think it was the usual thrushes, blackbirds, sparrows, magpies and tits. But I'll check later.

I'm doing mine tomorrow, when I'm sure it won't include any pheasants! Who's Betty?

I settled down to do mine at noon when I was alone in the house, but it was the wrong time of day (or the birds took exception to the fact that Albert decided to join me in my vigil) and, after half-an-hour of watching our normally crowded bird table while it was visited by just three bluetits and one sparrow, I gave up.

Albert, by the way, is my black and white cat who positioned himself on the humpty right next to the patio doors.

Breakfast would be the best time, but it's early service tomorrow so I'll try the last hour of daylight when the table should be reasonably busy, and the count more typical of my normal observations.

I find that breakfast time and dusk are the best too: so I'll be interested to hear how you got on yesterday. I recall you live near farmland too - so I guess we'll see the same sorts of birds.

I think they are quite sensitive to things inside the glass too -naughty Albert!
