Pheasant families

by loiswakeman @ 20/07/2007 - 14:01:51

Our resident pheasant cock, of whom I have written in the past, has gradually lost all his four or five wives over the past three months, and has been solitary for the last one.

pheasantsSo, I was very pleased to see him with a hen and a single chick yesterday and today. I assume while the hens are nesting, they can't forage far for food, and so couldn't visit the garden. I wonder if any more will reappear with families?

The chicks are just so endearing - miniature versions of their mothers, and they run so fast, they look like little wind-up toys. Aaaah.

Sorry about the crummy photo - they move very fast and it was a dark day, so the longish exposure wasn't ideal.

Pheasants are fun to watch aren't they? We don't get them in the garden here, but there are lots living in the wood down the road.

There are a few private shoots round here - but I suspect that 'my' family came to grief on the road or inside foxes.

. . . and they do make lovely eating although I hate to think of the shooting, hypocrite that I am. I hope nobody gets our resident pheasant and partridge families.

They do indeed. Coincidentally, tonight's supper will be woodpigeon casserole. Some chaps from the local estate parked their vans in our drive to go shooting, and gave us a couple to say thanks. So last night I was inhaling feathers!

We only seem to have a cock pheasant at the moment. I don't think I have ever seen babies before. You have educated me!

I must admit that I love our wild turkey chicks. It is great to watch them grow up and you learn to recognise them apart but they make such a mess when they are fully-grown that you tend to go off them a bit!
