Feed me...

by loiswakeman @ 11/05/2007 - 17:23:45

Yesterday I was rather amused to see a baby blackbird begging for food from a robin and a sparrow that were feeding from the same pile of seeds and porridge oats in the garden. One of those "if only I had the camera" moments: a big black bird with its bright orange bill wide open, bowing to two tiny 'parents'. I suppose the instinct to ask for food must be much stronger than any visual signals that might make the chick behave differently.

I'm surprised that a brood has already hatched successfully - it seems awfully early. Or do adults beg for food?

I think I'm right in saying blackbirds generally hatch from early April onwards. By the way, I get those 'if only I had the camera moments' every blasted day. You'd think I'd have learnt by now. James.

i've never seen that before, so thanks for sharing the moment!
i'm still marvelling at the skylarks in the meadow near home...they make such fantastic music.

Yes - listening to a lark singing is one of the best (free) experiences there is. A little bit of Heaven on Earth.

And when you hae a camera you realise that you need a better one. How many wonderful pictures of birds and animals come out as small brown fuzzy specks because your eyes are so much better than your lens?
