Heaven in Devon

by loiswakeman @ 03/05/2007 - 12:28:40

Yesterday, cabin fever overtook me after too many days staring at the computer screen, and I thought "blow this for a game of soldiers". I took the day off, and we went to Dartmoor on a gloriously sunny day. I chose a new place to visit, near Meldon.

Meldon WoodsMeldon Woods are a glorious sight just now - acres of bluebells in a hazel and beech wood on the valley slopes. Quite magical. (But you cannot hear the 40 ton stone lorries rumbling along the road from Meldon Quarry!)

Zen rocksBlack-a-Tor Copse is a rare relict upland oakwood, which could easily be inhabited by hobbits. As well as the subtle ochre of new oakleaves, there are lots of mossy boulders to admire. These brought a Zen garden to mind, and I chose a subdued colour palette to draw attention to the shapes. Perfect peace here - only the distant sound of a cuckoo,
bleating sheep, and the wind in the trees.

A perfect end to a perfect day: old-fashioned tea in the courtyard, at the Victorian tearooms in the Okehampton Museum of Rural Life. A soft-boiled egg with white bread and butter, a slice of home made jam sponge, and lashings of strong tea.

I'm envious! It sounds like the perfect day out.

It was - one of those days that I shall treasure the memory of, in the depths of winter.

oh that sounds heavenly....really lovely...and gorgeous pics!:D

I love Dartmoor and can't wait to come back and visit again.

We've stayed at the Two Bridges a couple or three times for mini-breaks and have visited Meldon in our ramblings. Aren't those rocks simply wonderful?

Yes indeed.

Have you been to Wistman's Wood near Two Bridges? You park in an old quarry and it's a gentle walk up the valley.

My other favourite trip is to walk from Venford Reservoir up to Bench Tor and down into the Dart Valley, then back along the old track to the waterworks. A mixture of wild open moor, wonderful granite rocks, waterfalls and beautiful oakwoods: and often there is an icecream van in the car park for your return!

I don't remember the name Wistman's Wood, but if it's close to Two Bridges then the answer is almost certainly 'yes'. Parking in an old quarry is definitely familiar.

We've walked from Venford Reservoir a couple of times, although have obviously followed a different trail. The waterworks I don't recall at all. I do have some images taken on and around Bench Tor though.
