Fieldfares ahoy

by loiswakeman @ 15/01/2007 - 15:30:45

Yesterday I saw a bird that is new to me (here, anyway) - a big flock of fieldfares wheeling round the big trees at the end of our lane. Their bright undersides and strangely harsh churring calls are quite distinctive: there's no other thrush-sized birds like that I know of. They have that breathtaking habit of closing their wings and dropping down every few seconds (to conserve energy I imagine) - a plane would stall, but they recover pretty quickly!

It was a day to remind me that it's good to be alive after all: bright sunshine after days and days of low grey cloud and rain. Seeing the fieldfares, and hearing thrushes and wood-pigeons calling, was another joy.

Lucky you. The link is to Redwings not Fieldfares which confused me somewhat.
I'm looking forward to the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in a couple of weeks, when I hope to do better than last year.

Ooops: thanks for spotting that mistake: I had browsed past the right page when I copied the link. Corrected now!

My birdwatch will be mostly pheasants and squirrels, with a few finches, tits and blackbirds thrown in! (Pheasants did really well last year: we have about 12 regulars under the bird table.)

That's okay, it's easily done as I well know.
Flying squirrels!? Last year I think that all the birds went away for the weekend to avoid being counted.
